Outsourcing can save you valuable time and money but you need to find the right person for the task. Whether you are considering outsourcing your admin, bookkeeping, call answering or anything else, here are 4 tips I have put together to help you to make the right decision:
1. Interview the prospective candidate. OK, so you are not actually employing the individual as a permanent member of staff but you will still have to work with them. It is important that you feel comfortable with the applicant as after all, they will be working unsupervised and you need to be confident that the tasks you give them will be completed correctly and on time. What experience do they have? Do they have the same attitude to work as you? Can you get on with them? Do they show common sense?
2. Check them out. If the company you are considering has a website, take a look at it to get a feel for the person. Are there any testimonials on the website? If not, ask them if they have any for you to see. Alternatively, ask another business owner if they can recommend someone to you.
3. Take a ‘test drive’. Give the candidate a task and see how they deal with it. This will give you a flavour of how they operate and whether they are reliable. It is a good idea to set a budget so that you do not have a nasty shock when you receive their invoice. This will also give you a good idea of the amount of work which can be achieved at a precise cost.
4. Expert advice. Someone new can often suggest ways to work which will streamline a task and save you time and money. If you are trying to do something and you find the process does not work for you, don’t struggle with it. Discuss the problem with the candidate and find out if they have any solutions or recommendations.
